People do not enter the music industry, they break into it. Mayorkun is the most recent artiste to examplify this adage. He came in with a bang and the industry is still shattering from the shot at stardom. Here are five things that you need to know about the star.
1. Mayorkun is already inspiring artistes
He just hit the industry hard, but such is his magnanimity that Mayorkun is helping light other artistes’ candles. An upcoming musician Tclassic is one of the beneficiaries of Mayorkun’s big heart. The former released an impressive song “Fall in Love” in June 2018 and the song made his dream come true. He didn’t do it alone. He featured Mayorkun and that made the difference.
“Mayorkun was just the perfect match for the song,” Tclassic told Vanguard. “We wanted somebody who could deliver the kind of vibe that we envisioned and Mayorkun’s name came up. We reached out to him and he delivered brilliantly.”
Some other uprising acts who have been boosted by the star include Tjan whose “Sotey” Mayorkun featured in, Dremo who had Mayorkun in “Izzokay” and Edanos who got Mayorkun to appear in his song “You Try”. Mayorkun just came into the industry and from the look of things, so far, he wouldn’t turn his back on the climbers in the lower rungs of the musical ladder.
2. The artiste has tasted SARS Harassment
the #EndSARS hashtag that became a major talking point on Social Media and even beyond since the first quartre of 2018 has added a new name and a new story to its antology of woes, pain and anguish. Early on June 14, the artiste tweeted: “May you not be harassed by SARS today in Jesus name.” A prayer, but not just a prayer; it was the singer’s way of drawing attention to the harassment he faced in the hands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Popular OAP Dotun of Cool FM retweeted the post with a comment that explained the tweet.
Mayorkun was billed to appear in Cool FM for an with the OAP when he was stopped by the special police officers who have become famous for their harassment, brutality and extortion. It is usually the common man on the street who suffers in the hands of SARS most, but now and again, a celebrity also fall pray. Dr Sid and Reekado Banks are two other known acts who have faced the wrath of SARS.
3. He hooked up with Davido via Social Media
Mayorkun started singing when he was aged eleven. Not professionally, of course, just singing probably hitting empty plastic cans on concrete. He sang in the choir, he sang at devotions, he sang in the bathroom (who doesn’t?), he sang elsewhere. Besides singing, he also played the keyboard and wrote songs. He said in an interview that he knew all this while that he would go professional some day.

Some day, fate visited. He posted a 15 seconds video of him playing a keyboard to Davido (featuring Olamide)’s video of “The Money” and tagged Davido with the note “please help me.” He expected nothing from this. But he was shocked. Davido followed him and sent him a direct message. Davido asked to hear some of his songs. He sent them, a new chapter opened and a new star was born.
4. Mayorkun earned peanuts while working in the banking industry
When Mayorkun found out he was into music beyond a hobby and decided to pursue a professional career, he was told by his mum to finish school first and get a job so as to have something to fall back to if music didn’t pay. The usual mothers’ advice. THe boy took this advice and after school he found himself working in a bank. Earning peanuts.

He was a marketer in a bank where he was paid a miserly five thousand naira every month and had to rely on commission he made trekking his shoes off the roads and streets of Lagos begging people to open accounts. The DMW star later got a new job in another bank where he was to earn 75 thousand naira, a fortune when compared to his earlier remuneration. Did he know that the real fortune would come in music? He had no clue.
5. He went two years without seeing his father
No, his father didn’t disown him or anything of that nature. His father had supported his career and kept him afloat financially when he was languishing in the backwaters of the banking industry. But once Mayorkun hit it big, he travelled around to shows, to studios, to sets, so much that he didn’t get to see his father for two years. Then his father showed up in Dallas, in April 2018, where the musician was having a show. Mayorkun was awed, he went to the Social Media to cheer. “He met me as ‘Mayorkun’ not as ‘Mayowa’ as he’s used to.”
Yes, his father knew him as Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel now he is Mayorkun. Then he was of his father and family, now he belongs to the millions of his fans.
