Igbo indigenous rapper Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, known by his stage name Phyno, is one star who broke into the music scene with a bang and has continued to drop bangers. How much of him do you know? A lot, perhaps. How little of him do you know? Maybe not so well. But we have you covered. Here are five little-known facts about the rapper.
1, He started as a producer
For the rapper, the journey of music fame and fortune begins with a producer step. Phyno took this step in 2003 and continued to walk the road until he decided, in 2010, to try his hand in rapping himself. Phyno did not release his first song until late 2012 when he dropped “Ghost Mode” featuring. Phyno would go on to release his first album “No Guts No Glory” in 2014, an album featuring stars such as P’square, M.I, Ice Prince, Omawumi, Flavour and Olamide.
As a producer, Phyno had worked with Mr. Raw, J-Martins, Bracket, Flavour, Ruggedman, 2Shotz, Timaya etc. He is still in the business of producing songs as he produces a sizeable amount of his songs himself.
2, He has been accused of being gay
In 2014, this picture (below) appeared online, where he appeared to be kissing Kcee. The noise about his sexual status began. Phyno has come out to delay this rumour, explaining that the picture was taken in a wrong angle and that the contact he made with Kcee was taken off context.
This is not the only controversy he was involved in an allegation of impregnating a certain Rita Edmond. He has denied the accusations, even the lady has come out to say the allegation is false and she didn’t know how this came about. Although she admitted this has fetched her more ppularity.
3, He lost the next rated award to Sean Tizzle
The rapper was nominated for Next Rated Award at the eight Headies held on 26th December 2013. He was nominated alongside Dammy Krane, Burna Boy and Seyi Shay. Sean Tizzle whose hit song “Sho Lee” came out that year. Phyno did not, however, go home empty-handed. He won Best Rap Single for “Man of the Year” and Best Collabo for the song “Ghost Mode” in which he featured Olamide.
Overall, Phyno has 3 Headies out of fifteen nominations.
4, Phyno is short for “phenomenal”
The nickname is derived from the one word that can be used to describe Phyno, “Phenomenal”. He was given this name in Secondary School by a schoolmate simply identified as Emeka. Today, many now refer to the rapper by many other nicknames of which Eze Nnunu stands out.
Phyno is indeed phenomenal. He moved to Lagos in 2008, such was his hunger for success that he founded his own record label in 2011. The norm is for upcoming stars to start by singing under another star’s label before going on to set theirs. Not Phyno. He founded PentHauze long before he dropped his first song.
5, He is an international art
Phyno has three albums “No Guts, No Glory” (2014), “2 Kings” (2015, with Olamide) and “The Playmaker” (2016). Successful albums with tracks that have hit beyond the shores of the country. In 2016, Olamide featured him, Drake, Wiz Khalifa and Nicki Minaj in the “Who You Epp Mashup Remix”.
